Tot-o-meter

Part of the bonus of interning for a features magazine is that it revolves so entirely around food, food, and more food (sometimes other stuff, but not often).

Which meanssss, getting to try random samplings of local cuisine when people feel inclined to bring leftovers back to the office after lunch.

Exhibit A: Tots

Tots from Regi’s American Bistro in Federal Hill were on the office menu today and after sampling them I decided that they can without a doubt give my resident favorite tots from Sticky Rice in Richmond a run for their money.

A.J.’s Tots are topped with creamy melted brie cheese and applewood bacon (and even though I technically don’t eat bacon, I’m not opposed to the whole eating around it strategy…probably a vegetarianism no-no, but it wouldn’t be the first time).

Sticky Rice’s Tots on the other hand straight from the fryer in a bucket. Yes, this bucket-o-tots comes with a world-famous, super top secret (actually just tastes like a spicy mayo-ketchup concoction) sauce to be enjoyed alongside such specialty rolls as The South Roll, a tempura-fried sweet potato roll with honey, or the incredible Sticky Balls, which is basically just a deep fried ball of gooey deliciousness (I believe there’s tuna and crab and eel in there, not entirely sure). And there you have it, the reason Sticky Rice is so addicting—strange, delicious sushi and out-of-place tots.

I never thought I’d see my Sticky Rice tots jeopardized, but these Regi’s tots are certainly holding their own, and I’ll have to keep an eye out for future contenders.
